John Criswick (Founder & CEO)
With a BASC in Electrical Engineering and an MSC in Quantum Mechanics, John is not your typical entrepreneur. Recognizing the need for mobile phone connectivity to the Internet, John founded Beduin Communications and built one of the first Java-based cell phone browsers. After Beduin was purchased by Sun Microsystems in 1998 he founded Rove Inc., to deliver enterprise systems administration to handhelds. He then founded Magmic Games in 2002 to concentrate on the emerging market of mobile game development and publishing. John is an industry visionary who shapes Magmic’s future direction through a unique mix of deep technical knowledge combined with a keen sense of the dynamics of the mobile entertainment market.
Joshua Ostrowalker (Founder & CTO)
Joshua was one of the first members of the Java Research and Development team at Corel Corp. He joined Beduin Communications in 1998 to develop a personal information manager as part of a suite of applications for Java-enabled devices. After Sun Microsystems’ acquisition of Beduin, Joshua worked on the team building an XHTML Basic browser and MIDP 2.0. At Magmic Joshua leads a team of world-class software engineers producing sophisticated mobile application development tools and next-generation mobile entertainment applications.
Phil Giroux(Chief Gaming Officer)
Prior to joining Magmic during its early stages, Phil worked extensively with large media companies, which included playing key roles in producing content for Warner Brothers, MTV, and NBC. Phil also worked in business development functions at leading telecommunications and Internet pioneers Nortel, Bell, AOL and Netscape Communications. Phil applies his industry knowledge to help strategically position Magmic in the market and lead its new business development activities.
Troy Johnson(Director, OEMs & New Platforms)
Troy brings a unique mix of technical knowledge combined with years of experience dealing with customers and strategic partners. He has worked on global enterprise software and hardware deployments at Motorola, Nortel, Cisco, Panasonic, Alcatel, Telus and Mentor Graphics in various support, sales and account management roles. After six years working in mobile Troy has amassed a wealth of industry knowledge and currently manages Magmic’s relationships with OEMs like RIM, Google, Nokia, Apple, Barnes & Noble, Amazon, Samsung and Kobo. He also acts as an advisor on product design, marketing, monetization strategy.
Lee Atkinson(Director, Creative)
For over 30 years Lee has acted as President of KLA Visual Productions, a company that produces animation for broadcast and interactive applications, with his partner and wife Kathi Atkinson. Some of his most recent clients include Subway Canada, The Backdraft Corporation, The Museum of Science and Technology, Fun Bag Animation, March Entertainment, The Canada Safety Council, Nexus Graphics, Interactivist Learning Solutions, Amberwood Entertainment, and the Family Channel. Lee heads the team of talented artists at Magmic, offering extensive experience to create a unified player experience across all game titles.
Mohammed Agha(Senior Producer, Games)
Hailing from the days of feature phone games, where he was porting J2ME games to over 500 different devices a week, Mohammad has been involved with mobile games from the infancy of the industry. Mohammad has worked on over 50 mobile games; many of them large brands. He has coded, designed, project managed, and produced games over his broad career. Now responsible for Producing all games both internally and externally, Mohammad is the grease that keeps the wheels turning at Magmic.
Dan Crawford(Director, Technical)
With over fourteen years experience in software design and five years of management experience, Dan brings a combination of technical and management skills which contribute to his success as the Director of R&D. Dan’s ability to work under demanding circumstances and his strong communication skills allow him to direct the growing R&D team responsible for maintaining and architecting next generation mobile software and services. His work for companies such as ENX Suite, Carbonetworks, Pretzil, Sun Microsystems and several years of Self-Employment have provided Dan with the knowledge and creativity to develop and simplify processes while deploying innovative solutions. Dan was also the person behind “The Get Your Name in a Game” Program which successfully prepares game developer students to hit the workforce by gaining hands on experience in the game industry while still in school.
Jonathan Simon(Director, Marketing & D2C)
With years of experience working in digital entertainment and an MBA from the University of Ottawa, Jonathan brings a mix of creativity, organization, and digital marketing knowledge to Magmic. Jonathan leads the marketing team, and is responsible for developing and executing the marketing / merchandising strategy including brand management, promotion, business intelligence, communications, product deployment, and customer support for all of Magmic’s mobile entertainment products across all of the platforms.
Jillian Mood (Director, Talent Acquisition & Culture)
Jillian Mood is the Director of Talent Acquisition and Corporate Culture at Magmic has been working in Human Resources for 10 years, specializing in TV and Video Games. She graduated with a Business Degree majoring in management in 2004 and jumped directly into an HR Manager role. Along with talent-finding, she plays a key role in keeping Magmic’s culture exciting and positive. She is excited to be working closely with the Algonquin Game Development Program and helping top students to get “their name in a game.” Jillian also helps with employees career paths, training and mentorships and strives to make each employees career and work life a fulfilling and positive one!
